The United Arab Emirates is globally recognized for ambitious sustainability and architectural standards. Under Dubai Municipality’s Al Sa’fat Green Building Evaluation System, thermal envelope optimization is a mandatory compliance criterion for all new residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
Why Thermal Insulation Matters in Dubai’s Climate
With ambient summer temperatures regularly exceeding 48°C and solar irradiance heating unshaded concrete roofs beyond 70°C, an uninsulated roof functions as a massive thermal radiator. Over 40% of residential air conditioning energy is consumed counteracting roof heat transfer.
Mandatory Compliance Metrics Under Al Sa’fat
- Maximum Overall U-Value for Roofs: The thermal transmittance value for roof assemblies must not exceed 0.30 W/m²·K for standard buildings and 0.20 W/m²·K for high-performance ratings.
- Solar Reflectance Index (SRI): Roof finishes must achieve an initial SRI rating of at least 78 for low-slope roofs to mitigate urban heat island effects.
- Moisture Permeance: Insulation materials must resist water absorption under prolonged humidity without losing thermal resistance (R-value).
Why XPS Boards Are the Preferred Spec
Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) rigid foam boards engineered to 35–38 kg/m³ density deliver consistent λ-values of 0.028 W/m·K with closed-cell moisture absorption under 0.7% by volume. In an inverted roof assembly, XPS boards placed above the primary waterproofing membrane also protect the bituminous or synthetic membrane from thermal shock.
